Boral Ridge Vent Installation: The Fresno Owner’s Guide

Boral ridge vent installation in Fresno typically runs $850 to $1,600 installed, depending on the linear footage, roof pitch, and whether the existing vent is being replaced or retrofitted on an older roof. Most Boral ridge vent jobs take one full day once we’re on site, and we stock Boral-compatible ridge vent and related flashing on our trucks so there’s no week-long wait on parts. You’ll usually discover the problem the same way every homeowner does: water staining on the ceiling near an exterior wall, a spike in your August cooling bill, or granules from your shingles collecting in the gutter right below the ridge line.

Here’s the thing about ridge vents that most Fresno homeowners don’t hear until it’s too late: the vent isn’t just a plastic or metal cap sitting on top of your roof. It’s part of a system. The Boral ridge vent works with your underlayment, your decking, and your attic’s intake vents to move hot air out. When one piece of that system fails in a Fresno summer where attic temps push 140 degrees, you’ll feel it inside the house within a week.

Which Boral Models This Applies To

Boral’s ridge vent line splits into two main families: the Boral Vent-Ridge series for asphalt shingle roofs and the Boral Steel Ridge Vent for metal and tile profiles. Within those lines, you’re dealing with 4-foot and 10-foot sections, and the compatibility question matters more than most installers admit. A Boral Vent-Ridge designed for a 4/12 pitch will not seat correctly on a 3/12, and we see that mismatch in Fresno all the time on older ranches in the Sunnyside and McLane areas where roofs were built in the 1980s. The vent profile, the nail flange width, and the weather filter material all change by series.

If you’re looking at an existing roof and you’re not sure what you have, check the end cap: Boral molds their name and a part number into the plastic on the underside of most vent sections. If the print is worn off or painted over, measure the flange width. Boral’s current Vent-Ridge ships with a 9-1/4-inch flange; older Boral stock from the 1990s runs 8-3/4 inches. You can’t fudge that quarter-inch with caulk. OEM Boral is our default recommendation for Boral roofs because the filter material is spec’d to their system. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist and cost about 20% less, but we’ve seen filter sag on aftermarket units after three Central Valley summers, which defeats the purpose of the vent.

One more thing: Boral ridge vent is not interchangeable with GAF Cobra, Owens Corning VentSure, or CertainTeed RidgeFlex. We keep all of those lines on hand too, but the nail patterns and filter media are different. If your roof is Boral, we put Boral on it.

Signs Your Boral Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Water staining on ceilings near exterior walls. This is the most common call we get in Fresno after a winter of heavy rain. The ridge vent’s end caps or the nails that hold the vent down have backed out, and water is running under the vent and along the top chord of the truss before dripping onto your ceiling. It doesn’t flood, it just keeps showing up as a slow brown ring.
  • Granules in the gutter directly below the ridge. Shingle wear at the ridge line is normal on a 20-year-old roof, but if you’re seeing dark patches of exposed fiberglass right where the vent meets the shingles, the vent’s nail flange has lifted and is chafing against the shingle edge every time the wind blows.
  • Attic heat you can feel through the ceiling. By July, a working ridge vent should keep your attic within 15 degrees of outdoor ambient temperature. If you walk into your hallway and feel heat radiating down from the ceiling, your vent is either clogged with dust and pollen (common in the Clovis and Woodward Park areas with all the agricultural dust) or the filter material has collapsed.
  • Birds or rodents in the attic. A cracked Boral end cap or a torn filter is an open door for starlings and pack rats. We’ve pulled nests out of ridge vents where the plastic had become brittle after 15 years of direct Valley sun.
  • Visible daylight through the attic at the ridge line. Go into your attic on a sunny morning and look up at the peak. If you can see actual slivers of daylight through the vent, the filter has disintegrated. That’s not ventilation; that’s a dust and water intake system.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here are honest numbers for Boral ridge vent installation in Fresno. We put the price in writing before any work starts, and that number does not move at the door.

Scope Typical Installed Price
Replace existing Boral ridge vent (up to 50 linear feet) $850 – $1,200
Full ridge vent replacement on a 2,000-2,500 sq ft home $1,100 – $1,600
Add ridge vent to an existing roof (cut and install, including new underlayment at ridge) $1,400 – $1,800
End cap and filter replacement only (minor repair) $275 – $450

The range comes down to three things: how many linear feet of vent you actually have, what your roof pitch is (anything over 7/12 means more labor and more safety equipment), and whether the decking at the ridge is still sound. If we open the ridge and find rotted OSB from years of slow seepage, we tell you before we do anything and the cost to replace that sheathing is added as a line item in writing. No change orders that show up out of nowhere. The labor and parts are covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if that vent or our installation fails within one full year, we come back and fix it at no charge. In writing.

DIY or Call Us?

A ridge vent on a single-story Fresno ranch with a walkable 4/12 pitch is something a capable homeowner can inspect from the ladder. You can look for cracked end caps, loose nails, and daylight through the filter. You can safely replace a broken end cap if you’re comfortable on a ladder and the roof is dry. What you should not do is remove and reinstall the vent itself. That involves working at the highest point of the roof, bending over for hours, and nailing into decking that may be compromised from the leak that brought you up there in the first place. We’ve done repair work on homes where the homeowner attempted a ridge vent replacement, slipped on granule-covered shingles near the peak, and caused more damage in one fall than the vent repair would have cost. The ridge is not where you learn roof work.

If you want to look at it yourself, do it from the ladder and keep your feet off the shingles near the ridge. Then call us at (559) 785-2160 and tell us what you’re seeing. I’ll tell you what it actually means.
