GAF Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
We stock and install GAF-compatible underlayment and repair rotted or failed roof decking throughout Fresno, with most underlayment replacements running $1,850 to $4,600 installed depending on roof size and deck condition. If your GAF shingles are curling, leaking at the eaves, or the attic shows dark water staining, the underlayment below those shingles has likely reached the end of its service life. We carry Deck-Armor, FeltBuster, and Tiger Paw on the truck, so most underlayment and deck repairs in Fresno get done the same day we diagnose the problem.
Travis Oakley has been straight about what a roof actually needs since he started running crews in the Valley. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means. That’s the way we work at Brennan Roofing Co Fresno.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
GAF underlayment isn’t model-specific the way a furnace part is, but it is compatibility-sensitive. The three GAF underlayment products we install most often in Fresno are:
- Deck-Armor – GAF’s premium breathable synthetic underlayment, rated for high-temperature exposure. This is what we recommend under Timberline HDZ and Timberline UHDZ shingles on Fresno homes where attic temps hit 140 degrees in July.
- FeltBuster – GAF’s reinforced felt product. It’s the budget-conscious choice, and it works fine under GAF Royal Sovereign 3-tab shingles on low-slope sections, but it doesn’t breathe as well as Deck-Armor in Fresno’s summer heat.
- Tiger Paw – GAF’s high-traction synthetic underlayment. We use it on steeper pitches, 6/12 and above, where the install crew’s footing matters. The traction surface is a real difference-maker on older Fresno homes with 8/12 and 10/12 rafters.
One compatibility gotcha we see regularly: GAF’s warranty system treats underlayment as part of a roof system, not an interchangeable part. If the deck fails under a GAF shingle warranty claim, GAF wants to see that the underlayment was installed to their spec. We document underlayment installation with photos because of this. Homeowners who had a previous roofer skip photos often hit a wall on warranty claims. Brennan Roofing Co Fresno is an independent service provider, not affiliated with GAF, but we install to their published specs because that’s what protects your warranty.

Signs Your GAF Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on ceiling corners or around ceiling fixtures. This is almost always underlayment that has torn at a seam or around a penetration. Underlayment is your roof’s real waterproofing layer – shingles are cosmetic weather protection. When the underlayment tears, water finds the deck.
- Damp, soft, or sagging spots in the attic sheathing. That’s the deck itself rotting. OSB decking that has been repeatedly wetted loses structural integrity. We replace it in sections, not patches, because a patched deck in Fresno’s wet winters will telegraph the seam right back through the new underlayment.
- Granule loss in the gutters that’s heavier than a dusting. GAF shingles shed granules as they age, but when you see bare spots on the shingle mat, the underlayment below is now exposed to UV. In Fresno’s 280-plus days of sun, that underlayment breaks down fast once the shingles stop protecting it.
- Curling shingle edges along the eaves. Eaves take the brunt of both rain and sun in Fresno. When underlayment at the eave edges fails, the decking wicks moisture and the shingles curl as the deck expands and contracts.
- Mold or musty odor in the attic after rain. That means water has been getting through the underlayment long enough to support biological growth. By this point, you’re usually replacing underlayment and a section of decking, not just one layer.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical Fresno single-story home of 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, a full underlayment replacement with some deck repair runs:
- Underlayment only (tear-off, new Deck-Armor or FeltBuster, re-shingle): $1,850 to $3,200
- Underlayment plus deck repair (up to 4 sheets of OSB replaced): $2,900 to $4,600
- Full re-deck plus underlayment and shingles: $5,200 to $8,800 depending on roof complexity, pitch, and access
The price goes on paper before any work starts, and it does not move at the door. That’s the Garrison Standard. Every underlayment and deck repair includes the written line-item quote, background-checked uniformed technicians, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise: guaranteed in writing for one full year, and we come back for free if it fails within that period. You’ll also get the deck photos and underlayment documentation that GAF’s warranty people want to see.
DIY or Call Us?
An owner can safely check the attic side: shine a flashlight along the decking seams, look for water staining, probe any dark spots with a screwdriver to see if the wood is soft. That’s free information. What isn’t safe is pulling up shingles to “peek” at the underlayment. A single row of mis-nailed shingles on a Fresno roof becomes a leak channel the next time it rains, and once the underlayment is exposed to our summer sun, it degrades within weeks. Also, walking a roof without proper fall protection is the leading cause of roofing-related injury for homeowners. If the deck is compromised, a foot can go through. Call (559) 785-2160 and let us put eyes on it. The estimate is free, and the diagnosis comes with a straight answer about what the roof actually needs.
FAQs
GAF synthetic underlayment like Deck-Armor lasts 15 to 25 years in Fresno’s climate when installed correctly under shingles that are replaced on schedule. Felt underlayment lasts 10 to 15 years. The wild card is UV exposure: any tear or shingle gap that lets Fresno’s summer sun hit the underlayment directly cuts its lifespan by half or more. Call (559) 785-2160 if you’re seeing granule loss or bare shingle spots.
Yes, a localized repair is possible when the failure is a small tear around a pipe boot or vent and the surrounding decking is sound. But if the underlayment is failing in multiple spots or showing age at the eaves and valleys, we recommend full replacement. Patching old underlayment on a Fresno roof is like putting a new sole on a boot that’s worn through in five places – the next failure is already scheduled. Call (559) 785-2160 for an honest look at which situation you’re in.
Most underlayment-only replacements on a typical Fresno home are done in one day. If we’re replacing decking sections, plan for a day and a half to two days depending on how many sheets come out and what the weather does. We keep Deck-Armor, FeltBuster, Tiger Paw, and OSB decking on the truck, so there’s no waiting on a supply house run. Call (559) 785-2160 for scheduling.
We do. Our Fresno trucks carry GAF Deck-Armor, FeltBuster, and Tiger Paw in the common roll widths, along with OSB and plywood decking for repairs. We also stock CertainTeed and Owens Corning underlayment equivalents for homeowners who have a different shingle brand on their roof. If you need a specific GAF product, we’ll have it staged before the crew arrives. Call (559) 785-2160 and we’ll confirm what’s on your roof and what we’re bringing.
If your GAF underlayment or deck has failed and you want a straight answer on what it costs to fix it right, call Brennan Roofing Co Fresno at (559) 785-2160. You’ll get a live person, a free estimate, and a written price before any work starts. No voicemail, no callback queue, no pressure. That’s the Garrison Code.
